The Story Behind #10: Ole

Halloween wasn’t started by Satanists or Pagans or even Hershey’s Chocolate. The history of Halloween is fascinating and long and starts with the Celtics over 2,000 years ago. Samhain was a special Celtic holiday that marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the cold, dark winter. The night before Samhain, October 31, was a time when the Celtics believed that otherworldly spirits could invade Earth and cause serious damage. But is also allowed some Celtics to look ahead into the coming year and make predictions. Samhain celebrations involved massive bonfires, some animal sacrifices (sorry, goats) and dressing up like animals and spirits. Therefore, Halloween was born.

Over the years, Samhain transformed even more thanks to those lovable conquerors, the Romans. It morphed even more as the generations went on until it became the festive, sugar-filled event we know and love today. I think it’s a fascinating journey: Halloween started as a sacred, serious tradition about agriculture and the year ahead and has now become a time for kids to dress up like the characters from Frozen and gorge themselves on sweets.
